HMS Tetrarch (N77) was a Royal Navy T-class submarine built by Vickers-Armstrongs at Barrow-in-Furness. She was laid down on 24 August 1938, launched on 14 November 1939, and commissioned on 15 February 1940.
Service History
During the Second World War, HMS Tetrarch served in:
- The North Sea and waters off Norway during 1940.
- The Mediterranean, operating from Malta against Axis shipping from late 1940 onward.
Among her successes were the sinking of:
- The German tanker Samland
- Several Italian merchant vessels, including Snia Amba, Giovinezza, and Città di Bastia
- The Italian tanker Persiano.
Loss
Tetrarch departed Malta on 26 October 1941, bound for Gibraltar and ultimately the United Kingdom for refit. She failed to arrive and was declared overdue on 2 November 1941. The submarine is generally believed to have been lost after striking an Italian mine near Capo Granitola, Sicily, with the loss of all hands.
