The Armed Forces Day on 29th June was a special event for WRS as they were using their very own gazebo and showing it off for the first time at an Armed Forces Day. Attended by Leigh Dodds (Events Coordinator), Steve Lee (CTB Manager), Trisha Bolt (Volunteer and CTB Widow) & LCS Louis Smith.
It was a beautifully clear and sunny day and were very, lucky with the assigned pitch, just behind the Cenotaph and by the Main Marquee. This meant lots of visitors to the WRS stand keeping the team very busy. Not only were they able to promote membership to WRS, but also we were able to sell some quality merchandise, including Polo shirts, car stickers, as well as the collectable WRS annual pins from previous years and T-towels.
Visitors to the WRS stand included the current Armed Forces Minister, Luke Pollard MP, whose own father was a serving submariner and the Deputy Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Pauline Murphy, who as a Royal British Legion Chair is keen to work with WRS in a closer capacity. Luke Pollard MP, was keenly interested in not only the WRS stand but the way they honour all fallen submariners, both veterans and serving. Luke also has a vested interest in attending the Submariners Annual Remembrance Parade on the 4 November 2024 and marching with the WRS contingent.
The day was a great success, promoting WRS to the certain delight of many children who were proud to wear the WRS sticky and wave a WRS branded pencil in their hands. CTB Manager, Steve Lee says “This was the best Armed Forces Day that we have attended to date and although we left rather weary, we all were very proud to wear our WRS red polo’s and be the voice of this great charity.”
